Here is a fine Japanese totai shippo (cloisonné enamel artworks which a ceramic, earthenware or porcelain body or foundation is utilized) of a slender and elongated neck vase. The highlight of the work is definitely the elegantly shaped neck of the vase. On the body of the vase, the dark enameled background is worked with various stylized floral heads and leaves. The upper portion of the neck, near the mouth of the vase, is decorated with formal stylized design, on a deep mustard yellow enameled ground. The vase is in remarkably excellent condition considering its age without any major faults such as cracks, chips, losses or restoration. The base is signed with a 8 character artist signature. " Dai Nip - pon , " (Great Japan), " ko - jin , " (personally, individually), Take - no Uchi. Taken together, it translates to Personally made by Take no Uchi , in Great Japan.

Given the scarcity of these totai shippo works, a signed example is an even more of a wonderful find. This exact piece is illustrated in Chapter 12, " Totai Shippo , " cloisonne enamel in which a ceramic, earthenware or porcelain body or foundation is utilized, in "Japanese Cloisonne Enamels; A Private Collector's Notes and Reference Guide, " by Gary Yoshino, page 80. Overall, an outstanding example of a very rare technique that was only produced for a relatively short time. The height of the vase is approximately 10.0 inches.

The circumference of the body is approximately 14.6 inches or about 4.5 inches in width. Due to the fragile nature of totai shippo , this piece will be double boxed and packed with tremendous care. Please ask any and all questions before purchasing this vase.
