Here is an unusual Japanese totai shippo (cloisonné enamel artworks which a ceramic, earthenware or porcelain body or foundation is utilized) of an elegantly formed vase. The highlight of the work is definitely the two applied mushrooms (sacred fungus) on the neck of the vase. On the body of the vase, light blue background is embedded with countless tiny metalic sprinkles which indicate the early period of totai shippo development. The vase is in remarkably excellent condition considering its age without any major faults such as cracks, chips, losses or restoration.
This exact piece is illustrated in Chapter 12, Totai Shippo, cloisonne enamel in which a ceramic, earthenware or porcelain body or foundation is utilized, in Japanese Cloisonne Enamels; A Private Collectors Notes and Reference Guide, by Gary Yoshino, page 80. Overall, a bright and cheerful example of a technique that was only produced for a short time. The height of the vase is approximately 6.25 inches.
