Rare Japanese Cloisonne Enamel Vase - Signed by Hayashi Hachizaemon. In this very rare technique, the metal foundation is applied with uniformly and tightly set cloison wires. The tightly set cloisons utilize a fine thickness of wire, nearly the thickness of human hair. The artist then applies the wires that form the design ON TOP of this enameled foundation! The design which is outlined in the ribbon-like wire becomes higher than the level of the background enameled surface.

The amazing result is that the morning glory blossoms, leaves and slender branches literally jump from the background. This "Raised Foreground" technique vase is in excellent antique condition without any major cracks, chips, areas of loss or restoration with an exception of one tiny missing enamel sliver. It was not possible to capture this missing enamel. Super advanced collectors are requested to refrain from purchasing this vase if this tiny condition issue causes concern; please allow other collectors this rare opportunity! As you can image, the Raised Foreground technique that exposes the design's border walls is extremely fragile and susceptible to damage so relatively very few examples appear to have survived over the years. The height of this vase is approximately 7.0 inches. The width of this vase is approximately 2.0 inches. Overall, a vibrant, and finely executed vase in the "Raised Foreground" technique that is seldom encountered.

This vase is illustrated and describe on page 51, in Chapter 7, " Japanese Cloisonne Enamels; A Private Collector's Notes and Reference Guide , " by Gary Yoshino. As Japanese cloisonné enamel is very fragile, we will double box and pack this item with extreme care. Please ask any and all questions prior to purchasing.
