A fine pair of antique Japanese cloisonne vases. By Gonda Hirosuke (1865 - 1937).
Little is known about Hirosuke's life, but his work is highly prized and sought after collector's today. Each vase has scenes of pigeons surrounded by patches of flowers and red autumn maple leaves (momiji) in cells of copper wire with shaded enamels on a black ground. Both rim and base have a tiny wire ringlet pattern around their circumference. Simply stunning vases from one of Japan's enamel masters!
Late 19th or early 20th century. It is in overall good, as-pictured, used estate condition.
Each vase has a small filled enamel repair (about the size of a pencil eraser). Otherwise, there are some very fine & light surface scratches here & there and other signs of expected light wear consistent with age. Each marked to the base with Gonda Hirosuke's maker's mark.
