These have been in my family for the next 64 years. In a china cabinet, away from the light and moisture and humidity. (No one was allowed to touch these or any other antiques - except my Mother). An appraisal by Sotheby's as to provenance, condition, authentication was done during a local appraisal fair held in Ventura, Ca over 30 years ago. The Cloisonne vases were verified as from the Meiji period, and the marking was consistent with the Hayashi Kodenji school and historically dated back before the 1900's.
The Sotheby's expert stated these were of high quality, authentic, and advised to protect them from heat and light. The bamboo stands are also authentic and are included in this listing. Either no official written appraisal was given at the time; or my Mother misplaced it.
She came home and told me what they were worth at the time and what the Sotheby's rep had said about the history etc. But 30 years ago, local one day appraisal fairs in various cities were scheduled by Sotheby's, Christies. This was years before'Antiques Roadshow began on PBS.
Two minor flaws on one vase is noted. But these appear on the rear which is totally cobalt blue/black with no scenes or flora or birds on the back. The detail and incredible depth of colors Hayashi Kodenji manifested as a brilliant artist.
Personally, I think they are so beautiful, elegant, and so detailed in even the minor areas. I pack all my items personally, with incredible packing unlike Amazon which throws their items into a larger box with no packing, no protection, no nothing. But I do not take the cheap route as many sellers do, with no wrapping, bubble-wrap, with items sliding around.
