Meiji Period Japanese Cloisonne Butterfly Vase

  
This is a lovely example of a Meiji Period Japanese wireless cloisonne vase. The vase is extremely detailed in muted colors against a black ground. The intricate patterns of the butterfly wings are so well designed that the butterflies appear to be in flight. This is a truly amazing work of art.

There is no mark on the base. There is wear consistent with age, such as tarnishing. There is also one small area of enamel loss which is shown in the last picture. Please excuse the quality of the photo.

It is very difficult to get a good picture. The enamel loss is about 2-3 millimeters with a curving scratch that extends from the ding that is about 5 millimeters.
