Presented is a stunning pair of antique Japanese Meiji period cloisonne vases, dating to the late 1800s or early 1900s. The vases are a gorgeous sky blue, with very vibrant and colorful cloisonne decoration showing a prunus tree and chrysanthemums with magpies in flight above and two phoenix or other long tailed type birds perched on one of the tree's branches.
The decoration is all richly detailed and very well done, from the long flowing tailfeathers of the birds to the delicate shading of the chrysanthemum petals. The vases are a true pair, such that the design will face one another symmetrically when they are displayed side by side. These vases came to us with a note inside reading: With Xmas Greetings from Mr & Mrs W. Cullen, Cloisonne Vases from Kyoto Japan! This pair of vases is in excellent condition.
