An exquisite large Plique-a-jour cloisonné vase of roses and chrysanthemums likely from Japan circa Early 20th Century. Makers unknown but possibly by Ando company.

The technique was hard to master as no wires were used to hold together the enamel. The sphere shaped vase is covered with polychrome enamel foliage and floral patterns. Plique a jour is a vitreous enamelling technique where the enamel is applied in cells, similar to cloisonne, but with no backing in the final product, so light can shine through the transparent or translucent enamel.
