This is a Mid 20th Century, Japanese Red Ginbari Cloisonne vase. The process was to underlay a foil base and then coat with a clear or translucent lacquer to create a sparkle effect.
This vase is 185 mm (7.283 in) tall (without the wooden base). The width (widest point) is 103.20 mm (4.063 in). The opening of the vase is 50.67 mm (1.9945 in) wide. The base is 62.87 mm (2.475 in) in diameter. Both the top and bottom exhibit a silver colored rim. The top rim is 5.35 mm (0.2106 in) wide and 4.29 mm (0.1688 in) thick. The bottom rim is 6.29 mm (0.2475 in) wide and 3.76 mm (0.148 in) thick. Both rims are non-metallic but believed to be metal.
The bottom retains part of the original paper identifier. There are no hallmarks to the vase.
The vase exhibits some very minor wrinkle effect to the original foil layer but that is to be expected of a hand made pottery base and is what makes this process so unique. The lacquer glaze in in excellent condition. The interpretive floral motif is reminiscent of Yuki Yanagi (Snow Willows) or Umi (Japanese Apricot). The base for this vase is a wooden open weave design that measures 80.98 mm (3.188 in) in diameter by 22.15 mm (0.872 in) high. We have included two photos attempting to get interior view of the pottery to indicate that it is in very good to excellent condition. There is one hairline anomaly on the interior, but is believed to be below the interior glazing and part of the original firing process. Visually, this is an impressive piece that will enhance any collection especially because of its dramatic red color as a background for the white, green, pink and wood tones of the flora.
