Hereis a rare Japanese tsuiki shippo (technique where the foundation is worked to create a sculptural quality and becomes the primary focus of the work). The vase is stamped on the bottom base in three kanji characters, Kawa-guchi Zo (made by Kawaguchi). Tsuiki shippo is a subcategory of ginbari, which is a general term for enameled silver foil ground. Tsuiki shippo technique focuses on the artistry of the design and execution of the base metal, usually silver.

The most famous artist that specialized in the tsuiki shippo technique is Kawaguchi Bunzaemon of Nagoya, Japan. Many of Kawaguchi Bunzaemons works are considered masterpieces of metalwork, where the foundation is often sculpted and carved to accentuate the design. In this fine work, Kawaguchi Bunzaemon has depicted a group of iris (shobu) in the foreground.

As in most of his works, the quality and attention to detail of the iris is superb. The vase is worked in a light purple enamel that gently dissipates towards the body of the vase. There is a small round point of impact to the left of one iris design and an image is provided to show the area.

Considering this small area, the vaseis in excellent antique condition with no other major cracks, chips, hairlines or restorations. The height of the vase is approximately 3.5 inches. The width of the vase is approximately 1.7 inches. The item "Japanese Cloisonne Enamel vase with the Tsuiki Shippo technique by Kawaguchi" is in sale since Sunday, July 5, 2020.
