The background is finished in a high polish, dark green enamel in pristine, mint condition without any major faults such as cracks, crazing, hairlines or restoration. This vase is marked on the base with a metallic foil decal for Tutanka , which is the export brand for Hirabayashi , a well known cloisonne enamel workshop in Japan. This technique is discussed in Chapter 6, entitled, "Imbedded Cloisonne Enamel" which explores various examples that incorporate design elements that has been added on top of the foundation. In many cases, the raised effect serves as the focal point of the work.
