I will be going through many, many storage boxes of items that were acquired many years ago for research and documentation purposes for my reference book. I estimate that this will take several months to complete. This contemporary work by the Ando workshop is unusual as silver foil design of a stylized butterfly was cut out and applied to the foundation. After the silver foil butterfly design has been applied, the Ando artist applied a clear enamel layer. The underlying design raising the enamel layer ever so slightly.
In addition, the Ando artist applied several elevated wire roundels resulting in an even higher raised effect. The background is finished in a high polish, dark blue enamel in pristine, mint condition without any major faults such as cracks, crazing, hairlines or restoration.
This exact piece is illustrated on page 40, in Chapter 6, entitled, Imbedded Cloisonne Enamel which explores various examples that incorporate design elements that has been added on top of the foundation. In many cases, the added layer has created a raised effect, serving as the focal point of the work. Refer to "Japanese Cloisonne Enamels; A Private Collector's Notes and Reference Guide, " by Gary Yoshino, pages 31 through 40. (PIB - P ictured I n B ook).
