Here is a beautiful Japanese classic mixed musen shippo (wireless) and yusen (standard wire) enamel cloisonné miniature tray with three cranes. When I began my grand quest to find and acquire unusual works of Japanese cloisonne enamels for my reference book, I quickly discovered how difficult and expensive it was to find strong examples for discussion and inclusion. This miniature tray was one of the very first examples I was able to find that leveraged both techniques of traditional yusen (standard wire) and musen (wireless) to create a naturalistic work. The highlight of the tray is how the artist confidently utilized a light turquoise colored enamel ground with minimal use of wires to highlight the cranes eyes and beaks. I wanted to find an early example that was predominately musen (wireless), but I could not find one that I could afford (essentially one that was under one thousand dollars).

This miniature tray is in good antique condition, but it has some cosmetic issues that early pieces typically have; there are very light flakes in the enamel along the copper rim. At a critical time when I needed strong examples that were both available and affordable, this was the perfect tray! The condition issues are shown in the last picture; please review carefully as most of the edge flakes were so light that they could not be captured in a photograph.

The length (top to bottom) of this tray is approximately 6.1 inches. The width of the tray is approximately 3.7 inches. Despite the cosmetic issues of the enamel edge flakes, this is a very rare miniature tray that depicts cheerful and wonderful design.

This exact piece is illustrated in Chapter 16, Yusen-Jippo; Standard wire cloisonne enamel, in Japanese Cloisonne Enamels; A Private Collectors Notes and Reference Guide, by Gary Yoshino, page 152. PIB - P ictured I n B ook. Not surprisingly, I paid a much higher amount than the listed amount as I absolutely had to have a great example of a predominately musen (wireless) and minimal use of wire for inclusion in my reference book.
