Here is a wonderfully formed Japanese cloisonne enamel vase with a brilliant light blue ginbari (silver foil foundation) ground. The vase is worked with three floral sprigs with leaves.

The Ando mark is formed in fine wire in the base, and is not easily visible due the highly reflective foil ground on the base. The background is worked with a finely worked fish-scale patterned ground finished with a light blue enamel in excellent vintage condition without any cracks, crazing, hairlines or restoration on the exterior. The only notable condition issue is a tiny pin-head sized hole to the clear enamel towards the back of the vase that was created in the production and a small ding to the top rim that does not affect the enamel. There are normal scratches on the bottom rim. The interior mouth area of the vase is similarly finished in the fish-scale patterned foil which is very unusual.

The height of this vase is approximately 7.25 inches. The width of the vase is approximately 2.75 inches. Overall, a very elegant and slender vase in excellent vintage condition signed by the Ando workshop, one of the most respected, innovative and influential cloisonne enamel firms still active since the Meiji Period (1868 - 1912). This exact piece is illustrated in Chapter 4, Ginbari-Jippo - Silver foil cloisonne enamel, in Japanese Cloisonne Enamels; A Private Collectors Notes and Reference Guide, by Gary Yoshino, page 18.
