"Totai Shippo" refers to cloisonne enamel applied to parts of a porcelain piece. Tree bark cloisonne is where the porcelain piece is made to look like tree bark.
This one has the typical dark tree bark vase, to which cloisonne enamel in the shapes of flowers, butterflies, etc is applied. It was made into a lamp probably in the 1910s or'20s.Note that the tube on which the shad rests is telescoping, so that the height of the lamp can be adjusted to fit the shade. One of the pull chains is missing, so that socket should be replaced. Lamps are ideal for displaying tree bark cloisonne because the pieces are typically dark and subtle, and they show best under light. The finial we used was the one pictured, which is a sea shell mounted on a brass base. The item "Antique Japanese Tree Bark Cloisonne Lamp.
