3500 "Make us an offer" Listings/. Antique Japanese Totai Shippo Brushpot Cloisonné on porcelain Japanese 19th C. A pair Japanese Totai Shippo cloisonne (cloisonné) pottery vases. Interesting scene with a balloon. Originally part of the Catherina collection of Japanese bronzes and cloisonne that was partly auctioned in Amsterdam in 2006 at Sothebys.
Some pieces are pictured in the catalogue of the collection from an Exhibition on Japanese and Chinese Cloisonne in the Princessenhof Museum in 1992. Totai Shippo is the name given to Japanese cloisonné on ceramics, both on earthenwares and on porcelain.
It has a similar appearance to metallic cloisonné ware, with metal cloisons sometimes individually filled with different colours however, some parts of the surface might be left decorated as normal blue and white porcelain. 2 or 3 spots where enamel is missing, 1 line from rim.
