This raised relief is called cloisonné , meaning compartments in French. Enamel paint is then poured into the cells and is subsequently baked in a kiln. Japanese Ginbari is a special cloisonné technique whereby silver foil is used to create a relief on metal surfaces. Once this is done, crushed colored glass is fused into the enamel and is poured onto the surface. The final step in the process is that each decorative piece is hand-polished into a glass-like finish.
