Chrysanthemum and butterfly motif Japanese Ando cloisonné enamel and embossed foil vase. This striking vase was made by the renowned Ando his workshop, founded in Nagoya, Japan.
By craftsman Ando Jubei in 1881. A gifted artist, Ando specialized in working with enamel and utilized medieval techniques including basse-taille, also known as ginbari, in which artisans engrave or chase a low-relief pattern in metal. The metal is then covered with translucent enamel, enabling light to reflect from the relief pattern beneath it and creating a shimmering effect. Ando also worked in innovative ways with cloisonné, another ancient art form in which opaque enamels are applied to items and then outlined in brass and silver wires. This vase has been finished in a ruby red color background known as pigeon blood or akasuke.
