Rare Japanese Cloisonne Enamel Vase with Applied Silver Panel Ando Workshop

  

Here is a rare Japanese cloisonne enamel vase with an unusual ovoid form with an applied silver panel. The applied silver panel depicts a stylized floral design with highlights of thick translucent green-blue enamel. The wirework is limited to the scrollwork border that serves to accentuate the applied silver panel.

The background is worked with a solid, bright yellow musen (wireless) ground, in excellent vintage condition without any cracks, crazing, hairlines or restoration. Over the years, just a few similar examples have appeared on the market, but nearly all share the same partial enameling on the silver panel. In other words, we are not certain if all of these applied silver panels were decorated with the translucent thick green enameling that resembles moriage (piled up enamel). The vase has a wonderful tactile and visual effect from the applied silver panels high relief that serves to separate the main design from the solid yellow enameled ground. The height of this vase is approximately 7.25 inches.

The width of the vase is approximately 2.75 inches. Overall, a very bright and visually stunning vase in excellent vintage condition signed the Ando workshop, one of the most respected, innovative and influential cloisonne enamel firms still active since the Meiji Period (1868- 1912).
