This particular vase has a dent on the rim of the mouth of the vase. There is enamel damage immediately below the rim as seen in the two images. Thisis a wonderful vase leveraging the tsuiki shippo technique by the master artisan, Kawaguchi Bunzaemon. Tsuiki shippo is a subcategory of ginbari, which is a general term for enameled silver foil ground.

This piece vividly shows the technical skills that are necessary for the tsuiki shippo technique, where the foundation is worked to create a sculptural quality and becomes the primary focus of the work. The tsuiki shippo technique focuses on the metal workers design and execution of the base metal, usually silver. The vase is stamped on the bottom base in three kanji characters, Kawa-guchi Zo (made by Kawaguchi). The most recognized artist that specialized in the tsuiki shippo technique is Kawaguchi Bunzaemon of Nagoya, Japan.

Many of Kawaguchi Bunzaemons works are considered masterpieces of metalwork, where the foundation is often carved, incised, or sculptured to accentuate the design. In this piece, Kawaguchi Bunzaemon has depicted a pair of cranes amongst pines on the silver foundation. Asin most of his works, the quality and attention to detail of the cranes and pine branches is superb. The silver body is exquisitely incised and carved with the ground finished in finely executed nanako (fish roe) ground. The height of the study piece is approximately 4.75 inches.

The width of the study piece is approximately 1.75 inches. Even though there is some damage to the rim and to the enamel area directly underneath the rim, overall, the vase is an excellent piece by an incredibly talented and famous artist. Due to the fragile nature of Japanese cloisonne enamels, this vase will be double boxed and packed with tremendous care.
