A Japanese totai shippo cloisonne (cloisonné) porcelain lidded jar or pot. The pot has a bright white porcelain body that has been applied with a number of small metal cloisons (wires) then turquoise ground colour and decorated with coloured enamels. The pot has been decorated with sixteen petalled chrysanthemum flowers and a butterfly. The body is a small short rounded cylindrical pot shape with a deep removable lid, dating from the Meiji period circa 1890. The inside of the lid is painted with a flower design in underglaze cobalt blue. Totai Shippo is the name given to Japanese cloisonné on ceramics, both on earthenwares and on porcelain. It has a similar appearance to metallic cloisonné ware, with metal cloisons sometimes individually filled with different colours however, some parts of the surface might be left decorated as normal blue and white porcelain, as is done on the inside of the lid of this item. In excellent antique condition, no chips, cracks nor restoration some discolouration on the unglazed inside of the lid flange.
