Here is a fine Japanese tree bark technique vase; a subcategory of totai shippo (cloisonné enamel artworks which a ceramic, earthenware or porcelain body or foundation is utilized). The highlight of the work are the numerous flowering blossoms and leaves worked in various shades of reddish-orange and green enamel. On the back, there are three butterflies flying about. This vase is signed on the center of the base with three kanji characters reading, Oka - moto Zo meaning made by Okamoto. The signature, in dark blue enamel, is very strong and vibrant. As in other Okamoto works, the background is finished with a highly textured surface which provides a stark contrast to the enameled floral decorations. The vase in excellent antique condition considering its age with only minimal surface abrasions or scratches.

Please refer to the images provided. This exact piece is illustrated on page 90 in Chapter 12, Totai Shippo, cloisonne enamel in which a ceramic, earthenware or porcelain body or foundation is utilized, in Japanese Cloisonne Enamels; A Private Collectors Notes and Reference Guide, by Gary Yoshino. Overall, a bright and vibrant example of a very rare technique that was only produced for very a short time.

The height of this vase is approximately 4.25 inches. The width of this vase at the midportion is approximately 4.5 inches. Due to the fragile nature of the tree bark technique, this piece will be double boxed and packed with tremendous care.
